The fact that this place was bustling even on a cold January day clearly speaks to its popularity. Located right off of Dam Square, Banketbakkerij van der Linde is the perfect place to grab a sweet, cold treat!
What exactly is it? To my best guess, it's a mixture of whipped cream and soft serve ice cream. Some bites are mostly whipped cream, some bites are more frozen, but every bite is delicious! The texture is so fluffy, and you can really taste the freshness of the cream! Some people are comparing it to McDonald's soft serve, but the flavor is much less sweet and more rich. If you're not a fan of vanilla ice cream, you may find the flavor a little boring. Personally I love dairy products, so I was in dairy heaven and easily polished off a large scoop!
The ordering system is efficient, so the line moves quickly. You can choose from 3 sizes and get your ice cream in either a cup or a cone. (I would recommend a cone--they're crispy and fresh!) You point to the option you want and pay at the counter, then you get a little chip to hand to the person scooping the ice cream. They also sell a few types of chocolates and whipped cream-based cakes but I wouldn't bother!
There are a few seats and benches where you can sit and enjoy your cup or cone indoors, but it's not a particularly cozy spot to hang out. Just grab and go!
I can't pronounce the name of this place, but I'm a huge fan!! Probably the most unique vanilla "ice cream" I ever had. The texture is fluffly, soft, and creamy, almost whip cream like, but also similar to soft serve? That's what trips me out because I can't even categorize this heavenly dessert.
My bf and I visited this place and there was no line whatsoever. It was raining that day, on and off, so business might have been lacking, but there were definitely people enjoying their ice cream indoors. This place, from what I've read, is quite popular and is a top dessert place in Amsterdam.
Service was quick, friendly, and kind. I THINK this is a family run business. Besides their single flavor ice cream, they also serve truffels and other goodies. For the ice cream, you can pick how you want to eat it--- sandwiched between two waffles? On a cone? In a cup?
I highly recommend trying this place, whether you're a fan of ice cream, whipped cream, soft serve or not. It's NOT going to be like anything else you've tried, so go for it. Prices are affordable, and location is convenient if you're shopping in the area.
Amsterdam Oersoep
A mosaic of Italian glass and other ornamental decor has transformed Amsterdam’s Beurspassage into a beautiful piece of public art called “Amsterdam Oersoep.” Artists Arno Coenen, Iris Roskam, and Hans van Bentem are responsible for the corridor’s makeover.
Amsterdam Oersoep, which means “primordial sea,” pays tribute to Amsterdam’s famed canals. It’s also a visual narrative that tells the story of how all of Earth’s lifeforms originated from water. Images associated with the Dutch city’s iconic waterways fill the approximately 4,840-square-foot glass mosaic, and there are also Art deco mirrors and chandeliers made from recycled bicycle parts. The floors, which were made with traditional Italian Terrazzo, were designed with patterns that mimic those typically found at archaeological excavations.
The artists gave the Beurspassage its dazzling renovation as part of a redevelopment project called Nowadays. The passageway is a fairly popular place among both locals and tourists.
